Working effectively
The family, like most others, had had enough of not being able to function at critical times – 4 to 6 am and 6 to 8 pm. These are times the family get ready for the day's activities, and wind down after the work or school day has ended. Any loadshedding is inconvenient. It does not matter when it happens.
The solution was a standard 5kVa inverter with two 5kVa batteries, linked to 14 solar panels. While it was not possible to place all the panels on the north-facing slope of the roof, as many as could fit were placed in the prime location, and the remainder placed as effectively as was possible. This part of the country is blessed with many days of full sun, for about seven hours per day and even slopes facing east and west get substantial sun.
As with all other solar solutions, it takes time to find the right balance between what appliances are used simultaneously. Power-hungry items such as kettles, stoves, geysers, washing machines, hair dryers, and pool pumps should not be used at the same time, else the system will be overloaded. This is simply the reality of the limitations certain solar solutions have and families have to learn to adjust.
